River Route

River Route: Twin Cities to Chicago

The proposed Twin Cities-Milwaukee-Chicago Second Train would run through southeastern Minnesota's Mississippi River valley, a natural jewel, and among the most beautiful locations in America. Service would include a stop at the revitalized, historic Union Depot in St. Paul and travel through picturesque river towns in Minnesota on its way to major destinations such as Wisconsin Dells, Milwaukee and Chicago. This route is home to the existing Amtrak Empire Builder route.

A Closer Look at the River Route

Expanded passenger rail would open up a new world of opportunity for discovery and exploration across the Midwest and beyond. Minnesota residents would be able to climb aboard one of up to eight daily round-trip trains and be whisked to destinations like the Wisconsin Dells and Milwaukee. And a trip to the hub in Chicago would connect Minnesotans to a wide network of high-speed rail to destinations like St. Louis, Kansas City, Detroit, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and more.

That same network would provide access to the many incredible destinations within Minnesota, including along the Mississippi River Route. Imagine families throughout the Midwest visiting our beautiful river towns and exploring destinations such as the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Lark Toys in Kellogg, Lake Pepin in Lake City, Treasure Island Casino near Red Wing and all the amenities of the Twin Cities.

This map highlights some of the destinations along the Mississippi River Route.
